“How is the market?” September 2023

A monthly recruitment blog for National Account Managers, Brand Managers and Category Managers

(and everybody else in FMCG Sales, Marketing and Category!)

In last month’s [axr] Sales & Marketing Collective, our monthly report of who’s moved where in the market, we were bullish on the recruitment market and maintain that stance. Our patented market barometer (below) is at a robust 8. Demand for talent continues to exceed supply, employment in NSW is at 96.9%, and immigration increases will take months and years to create more market liquidity. Interestingly, consumer/shopper behaviour doesn’t mimic economic reality and that creates some uncertainty in our CPG/FMCG clients. Despite record employment levels, a slowing of inflation, and a stabilising of interest rates, consumers are only now starting to “tighten their belts”. Most FMCGs are predicting a short to mid-term shift away from HORECA and into grocery. Watch out for the term “fake away”, where shoppers seek to replace a take-away with premium retail ingredients to “fake” their own. You heard it here first! More accurately, if you’re a listener to our podcast, Your Future in Sales & Marketing, your heard it on Ep 68 from Mutti Sales Director, Daniela Stapleton.

What does this mean for sales, marketing and category? After 3 months of a flat demand category has seen a spike in new roles and movement. We’re hearing that category development and strategy is where the energy is going given the hard-to-predict shopper landscape ahead. Conversely, we’re seeing a slight drop off in the perennially hot market for NAMs. In brand marketing, we’re working on a bunch of roles in innovation – another sign of confidence with organisations investing in future growth. The senior market continues to show more positive signs, evidenced by the most number of senior moves we’ve ever recorded in this month’s Sales & Marketing Collective. Finally, our launch of a co-produced whitepaper on Revenue Growth Management with recent podcast guest, Paul Bull of FMCG Analytics, shows you where we think future demand will come from. Watch THAT space closely.

Summing up, a market score of 8 on the [axr] barometer is accurate.
