Be a GUN not a GUNNA

by Greg O’Shea

In my role, I get to meet a lot of people and I am always amazed by how many complain about their job yet do little about it. I am not sure why people feel like they are chained to their desks/employer – if you don’t like it; move!

We all have bad days, however, if you are continually getting out of bed cursing the fact that you have to go to work, it is a sure sign you are in the wrong job. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. This can be applied to your job.

If you want to get ahead in your career, ask yourself a few simple questions: –

  • Do I enjoy my role?
  • Am I passionate about what I do?
  • Do I share the same values as my current employer?
  • Where will my role take me?
  • What do I want to get out of my current role?

We should always be asking these questions of ourselves and make sure we are in the right place. If you are a “no, nowhere or nothing” to any of these, do something about it. GUNNA is code for couldn’t be bothered and if left unaddressed for too long you will find yourself in a downward spiral.

Take responsibility for your own career and make sure you are getting rewarded. You will be amazed how much better your life will be. It is not easy to move jobs, but it is a lot more draining being miserable.

To me, a GUN professional is someone who has taken ownership of their career and is always looking for the next challenge/opportunity. They are aware enough to realise they have to prove themselves to an employer, but also know what is important to them.

So, if you are whinging about your job, get off your bum and do something about it.
