Starting to make a real difference

by Greg Madden & Greg O’Shea

Did you know that Injury the biggest killer of Australian children? That’s twice the number of hospital admissions as cancer, diabetes and heart disease combined. It is hard to believe that we have only just had the first ever national study into children’s injury. (Read article: Playground danger- Injury the biggest killer of Australian children, report finds)

The results are confronting in terms of the total number of children injured and those with severe injury. The work done by Professor Kate Curtis and Professor Rebecca Mitchell is long overdue and we should now see the development of a new national injury prevention plan.

The work has been funded by The Day of Difference which the team at [axr] have had the pleasure of supporting and working with over the last 6 years. The charity is a great example of a small group of people with real purpose making a difference.  Special recognition needs to go to Charles Dennis and Julie Englefield who worked tirelessly on supporting the research project through fundraising and belief.

We would like to thank the friends and clients of [axr] who have supported us in fundraising for The Day of Difference. This has been achieved through the annual Charity ride and we are proud to have contributed some $100,000 in fundraising over the last 5 years. Again, big thanks to everyone who has supported us.

Let’s hope that the appropriate government agencies now listen and act on the research. It would be great to see a national prevention plan developed – it is needed. If you would like to find out more about the amazing work Day of Difference Foundation is doing by visiting their website
